NEW ORLEANS — Two down. One to go.

With two of the three NCAA Championships in the books – cross country and indoor track & field – it’s time to look at the standings for the Al Carius Men’s Program of the Year Award and the Deb Vercauteren Women’s Program of the Year Award in NCAA Division III.

The USTFCCCA Program of the Year Award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution’s finish at the NCAA Championships.

In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the team’s finish at each NCAA Championship in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points … 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award winner. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.

There are only two programs that finished on the podium in both cross country and indoor track & field: MIT and SUNY Geneseo. It should come as no surprise that both the Engineers and the Knights top the standings. However, it’s MIT at the top with its national title in cross country and an ensuing runner-up effort indoors. That gives the Engineers three POY points, which is 3.5 fewer than SUNY Geneseo, which finished third both in cross country and indoors.

Indoor national champion UW-La Crosse sits third with nine POY points, followed by John Carroll – and its two top-6 finishes – with 10 POY points. UW-Whitewater rounds out the top-5 with 19 points, as the only other program with two top-10 finishes to its name.

Johns Hopkins is in a familiar spot – on top. The Blue Jays are perched atop the standings to be named the Deb Vercauteren Program of the Year thanks to their national title in cross country and a fourth-place effort under a roof. That gives Johns Hopkins a total of five POY points.

UChicago and Washington (Mo.) are tied for second with eight POY points. The Maroons and the Bears are inverses of each other: UChicago finished second in cross country and sixth indoors; WashU took sixth in cross country and second indoors.

Wartburg is a distant fourth with 12 POY points, followed by indoor national champion UW-La Crosse with 16 POY points.
