ALL RIGHT. WELL, WE ALL HEARD OF CELEBRATIONS, BUT HOW ABOUT A CELEBRATION? IT’S HAPPENING MARCH 31ST AT THE HAITIAN BALLROOM AUDUBON ZOO. AND JOINING US IS, OF COURSE, LEE SOUTHWICK JAMES, CAST OF THE COALITION TO RESTORE COASTAL LOUISIANA TO TELL US MORE ABOUT IT. SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US TODAY. REALLY APPRECIATE YOU BEING HERE THIS IS A BIG TREAT TO BE INTERVIEWING WITH LEA. OKAY. SO I GUESS I KNOW. SO, MR. CARS, WHAT IS CELEBRATE? FOLKS WANT TO KNOW WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT. YEAH, IT’S AN ANNUAL CELEBRATION THAT PROMOTES AND RAISES MONEY FOR THE COALITION TO RESTORE COASTAL LOUISIANA’S OYSTER SHELL RECYCLING PROGRAM, THROUGH WHICH WE PARTNER WITH NEW ORLEANS AREA RESTAURANTS. AND WE TAKE SHELL THAT WOULD OTHERWISE GO TO LANDFILL. AND INSTEAD WE PUT IT BACK INTO THE WATER WHERE IT CAN HELP TO SLOW COASTAL EROSION AND CREATE CREATE HABITAT FOR NEW OYSTERS TO GROW AND WITH THE OYSTER SHELL RECYCLING PROGRAM, I GOT THE PRIVILEGE TO JOIN YOU ALL ON THAT AND ACTUALLY SEE HOW YOU BUILD THESE REEFS. BUT CAN YOU TELL OUR VIEWERS MORE ABOUT THE RECYCLING PROGRAM? YES, BASICALLY, WE PARTNER WITH NEW ORLEANS RESTAURANTS. IT’S A LITTLE BIT OVER TWO DOZEN RESTAURANTS RIGHT NOW. WE’D LOVE TO HAVE MORE. AND THEY SAVE THE SHELL RATHER THAN THROWING IT AWAY WITH THE REST OF THEIR TRASH. IT GETS COLLECTED A COUPLE OF TIMES A WEEK. THEN WE TAKE IT DOWN TO SAINT BERNARD PARISH, WHERE IT CURES IN THE SUN FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS AND THEN WITH THE HELP OF VOLUNTEERS, WE PACKAGE IT INTO MARINE GRADE MESH BAGS AND WE PLACE IT INTO THE WATER. WE BUILD A WALL OF OYSTER SHELL BETWEEN THE WATER AND THE SOFT SOIL AND IT SLOWS DOWN EROSION BY A LOT AND REALLY MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE. THERE’S SOME FOLKS WATCHING RIGHT NOW THAT SAY, YOU KNOW WHAT, I WANT TO BE A PART OF CELEBRATION. I WANT TO BE PART HOW CAN I BE A PART? HOW CAN FOLKS GET TICKETS? YEAH, TICKETS ARE ON OUR WEBSITE. THE COALITION TO RESTORE COASTAL LOUISIANA, THEY DO A LOT OF REALLY COOL THINGS AND YOU ALL HAVE SEEN SOME OF OUR STUFF HERE. BUT WHAT ELSE DO YOU HAVE GOING ON BESIDES THIS? YEAH, WE HAVE A LOT OF VOLUNTEER EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. JUST LAST WEEKEND WE PLANTED 500 TREES AT MORGAN CITY. WE HAVE A LOT MORE EVENTS LIKE THAT. WE’RE HOSTING A LECTURE NEXT MONTH WITH THE AUTHOR, MIKE TIDWELL, WHO’S COMING BACK TO LOUISIANA 20 YEARS AFTER HE WROTE HIS BOOK, BAYOU FAREWELL. AND WE HAVE A CONFERENCE IN IN LATE MAY AND EARLY JUNE. I LOVE KEEPING UP WITH ALL THE STUFF YOU GUYS DO, RESTORING THE COAST, IMPORTANT INFORMATION, IMPORTANT INFORMATION. Shell-A-Bration is a family-friendly event that will include live music by Sweet Crude, local foods, including Louisiana oysters, local brews, door prizes and a silent auction. There will also be children’s activities. This marks the first time Shell-A-Bration has been held at the zoo. It will start at 7 p.m on March 31. Tickets, which cover the cost of admission and food and drinks, are $75 per person; for children 2 to 12 years old, the cost is $25.The event benefits CRCL’s Oyster Shell Recycling Program. Through the recycling program, nearly 13 million pounds of shell have been diverted from landfills and returned to the water along Louisiana’s coast, where they become reefs that slow coastal erosion. CRCL began the program in 2014 and have built five reefs so far. Oyster reefs significantly slow the rate of coastal erosion, and they also create a habitat for new oysters to grow, as well as a habitat for other wildlife. Reefs also minimize storm surge during hurricanes. Shell-A-Bration sponsors are PosiGen, EMR, Ryan Gootee General Contractors, Jacobs, Stag Liuzza, River Parish Disposal and Where Y’at. Oysters are provided by Louisiana Seafood, Robin’s Oysters and Bayou Rosa Oyster Farm. Abita is donating beer, and many individuals and businesses have donated auction items. About 2,000 square miles of Louisiana’s coastal wetlands have vanished in less than a century, threatening the state’s culture, communities and economy. CRCL became the first statewide nonprofit dedicated to restoring Louisiana’s coast when it was incorporated in 1988. The group, which is a member of the Restore the Mississippi River Delta campaign, holds volunteer events throughout the year.
