The U.S. Senate confirmed Baton Rouge attorney Darrel Papillion on Tuesday for his lifetime appointment as a federal judgeship for the New Orleans-based U.S. Eastern District of Louisiana.
Papillion, a former Business Report Forty under 40 honoree, has been a partner at Baton Rouge-based firm Walters, Papillion, Thomas, Cullens LLC since 2009. As an attorney, he specialized in cases dealing with wrongful death and serious personal injury.
He was nominated in March by President Joe Biden and backed by Sens. John Kennedy and Bill Cassidy.
U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, praised the nomination as a nonpartisan agreement.
“Today, we have another [confirmation]—two Republican senators with a Democratic president,” Durbin said. “It happens. For it to happen, you need two things. [First,] the will for members to move and put nominees on the bench. Secondly, a person so qualified that both sides don’t feel that they’ll be embarrassed by them. There are more judges and attorneys than there are politicians. In this case, we found that kind of nominee.”
A former president of the Louisiana State Bar Association, Papillion was confirmed on a 59-31 vote.
The LSU alum started his career as a law clerk for Louisiana Supreme Court Associate Justice Catherine D. Kimball from 1994 to 1995, and moved to Baton Rouge in 1999 to join Moore, Walters & Thompson as an associate. He was also a partner at Moore, Walters, Thompson, Thomas, Papillion & Cullens from 2001 to 2009.
Papillion’s firm Walters, Papillion, Thomas, Cullens LLC was named Business Report’s No. 1 Best Place to Work in 2021. Check out a previous Business Report 3 Things to Know feature spotlighting Papillion.
