NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Kingsbarns led wire to wire to win Saturday’s $1 million Louisiana Derby by four lengths and accumulated 100 qualifying points into the Kentucky Derby.

Ridden by Flavien Prat and coached by Todd Pletcher, Kingsbarns ran 1 3/16s in 1:57.33 after breaking forward and then leveling off at a relatively slow pace on a warm, dry day. The rest of the field fell back and sprinted home on the final corner while Kingsbarns pulled away comfortably to go unbeaten in three races.

“The horse jumped out of the gate pretty well and was able to take the lead right away,” said Prat. “From that point on we were able to get a pretty gentle pace and he was very comfortable, had a good rhythm and was breathing well.

Kingsbarns, a 9-2 second favorite in the field of 12, paid $11 to win.

The result practically secures the 3-year-old filly a place in the field of 20 horses for the Kentucky Derby on May 6th.

Kingsbarns had five career Louisiana Derby victories for Pletcher, who already has early Kentucky Derby favorite Forte, winner of the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream. Forte will be racing again next weekend in the Florida Derby.

Disarm, who went off 7-1, stormed through the field late to finish second, and Jace’s Road was a further two lengths adrift of third at 6-1 after going from corner one to the start of the home straight leadership had fought .

Disarm accumulated 40 points for the Kentucky Derby, probably enough to make the field. Jace’s Road collected 30 points and was also able to drive at Churchill Downs.

Instant Coffee, the 3-2 post-time favorite and winner of the Lecomte Stakes at the Fairgrounds in January, finished sixth after falling early to 10th.
